Programma per GTD

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Java6 is out

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Java6 is out this week. The java language itself remains the same as Java5 but many other API’s have been added so altogether is a very nice upgrade. Notable improvements is support for Web Services, scripting, JDBC 4.0, desktop integration stuff and the new layout manager GroupLayout, monitoring and management things like dynamic attach, improvements to Swing, security, performance etc. More info here.
I think this will be a smooth passage for people that already passed to Java5 and it might just offer some sweet incentive to all die-hards that still haven’t done the leap.

Leading Java clustering solution goes open source

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

Following the trend (or madness) that currently rocks the Java world a leading java clustering solution has been open sourced. Teracotta becomes OpenTeracotta and it seems they have decided against having more then one edition (professional/community) so basically if you need any of these features you might be in luck:

  • Heap-Level Replication
  • Cross-JVM Coordination
  • Large Virtual Heaps
  • Fine-Grained Changes
  • Runtime Management and Control
  • No Serialization

This brings some high-end enterprise features in reach to anyone and I hope this strategy will bring more clients to the Teracota team. In the end, if an open source solution brings quality to your enterprise, you should give something back. Download here. Tutorials here.

Firebug 1.0 beta

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

). Tra le ultime troviamo:

  1. Ispezione e modifica in tempo reale del DOM XHTML.
  2. Ispezione e modifica in tempo reale del CSS.

Funky keyboard – wicked!

snapshot of the keys

Some overly creative people have decided to create the ultimate keyboard and if it didn’t cost 1200$ I’d actually want one. Check it out, the Optimus keyboard (concept). If I can give them advice, I’d like it to be able to pick up the characters from the keyboard used, even if not official ones, as now we can modify our layouts using MKLC (and I intend to use it). I think it would be feasible to write a driver that can hook up to the system and read the current keyboard layout and the characters to map. If you could also choose the font to display it would be even sweeter. 🙂
No need to make the keyboard too smart, just put some userspace component that can hook up to the OS internals, read layout, rasterize bitmaps for the LED’s and shut down itself if not necessary (especially if you decide to write it in .net under windows).

Simple image viewer in Javascript

Friday, December 1st, 2006

Lightbox JS is a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. I think we posted about it before but I found out they released a version 2 of the library (now featuring also a Gallery mode) so it deserves a bump. Featuring:

  • Image Sets: group related images and navigate through them with ease
  • Visual Effects: fancy pants transitions
  • Backwards Compatibility: yes!
